Aevum Vita 406
Multifunctional Surfactant
INCI: sodium caproyl/lauroyl lactylate (and) sodium citrate

Aevum Vita 406 is a mild, naturally derived surfactant for use in cosmetic and personal care products. As a PEGfree anionic surfactant with excellent foaming properties, it is ideally suited for use in baby shampoos, skin friendly hand washes, and natural cosmetic formulations.

In addition, Aevum Vita 406 also exhibits anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, allowing formulators to reduce or even eliminate the preservative content from their formulations.. Also, its efficacy against Malassezia furfur makes it particularly suitable for use in antidandruff shampoos.

Sensory Testing

In blind tests conducted with a formulation containing 2% of Aevum Vita 406, the majority of volunteers (64%) described their hands as feeling “soft” or “smooth” after using the soap containing Aevum Vita 406 and commented that the formulation without Aevum Vita 406 did not lather as well.

Foaming Properties

The foam height and decay of Aevum Vita 406 was tested using Ross Miles apparatus under standard test conditions.

Each surfactant (Aevum Vita 406 and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) was tested as a 10% aqueous solution based on active content. The dilute solutions were dropped from a fixed height into a reservoir of the same dilute solution.

The foam height was measured over a period of five minutes. Aevum Vita 406 gave a greater volume of foam, and better foam stability, than the equivalent solution of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. In addition, Aevum Vita 406 can be used as a foam booster.

A solution containing 9 parts of SLS to 1 part of Aevum Vita 406 produces a greater amount of foam than using SLS solution alone.

Other surfactants such as cocoamidopropyl betaine, cocoglucoside and decylglucoside have also been assessed for their foam height and stability in combination with and without Aevum Vita 406.

Results show that Aevum Vita 406 can be used confidently as a co-surfactant.
